The State legislature is in the final days of its 2020 session, and several critical bills need your support to pass the legislature and head to the Governor’s desk. See below for what critical bills need your help and how to reach out:

• SB 329 (Mitchell): This bill would prohibit landlords from discriminating against a current or potential tenant based on their source of income. SB 329 would be a critical step in ensuring Los Angeles can fully leverage existing Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers, Rapid Re-Housing Vouchers, and other resources. • AB 1482 (Chiu): This bill would place a temporary cap of approximately 10% on annual rent increases, while also extending just cause eviction protections to California renters that have lived in their unit for more than 12 months. This bill would be a critical step forward to stabilize California’s millions of renter households, while providing added protections against evictions. In Los Angeles County alone, there have been over 550,000 formal evictions over the last decade.  To let your legislator know that you support the bill, contact your Senator—find their contact information by clicking here: http://findyourrep.legislature.ca.gov/ You can read LAHSA’s support letter for the bill here.

• SB 282 (Beall): This bill would re-align some state corrections funding to increase supportive housing for people on parole. People exiting the justice system are at increased risk of homelessness, and many exit their incarceration directly into homelessness. This bill would increase housing supports for this population and reduce the number of people on parole that exit the justice system into homelessness.
