Webinar Series: Housing Rights of Survivors of Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, and Human Trafficking
The Violence Against Women Act (“VAWA”) and California state laws protect survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, stalking, and human trafficking from discrimination in accessing and maintaining federally assisted housing because of the violence committed against them.
In 2013, Congress expanded VAWA’s housing protections by covering additional federal housing programs, including housing assistance funded by the Continuum of Care and Emergency Solutions Grants programs. In April 2019, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the VAWA Reauthorization of 2019 (H.R. 1585), sponsored by Reps. Karen Bass (D-CA) and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA). Members of the Senate, led by Sens. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Joni Ernst (R-IA), are now working on their own version of the bill. To that end, although VAWA reauthorization negotiations are still underway, the housing protections under the 2013 VAWA are still in effect.
To learn more, please listen-in on this two-part webinar series, which will:
provide an overview of the dynamics of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking,
review housing protections for these and other survivors under federal and California laws,
discuss the obligations of the Continuum of Care housing providers under these laws as well as review LAHSA’s VAWA Checklist for housing providers, and provide information on local resources unique to LAHSA’s VAWA policy.
