Douglas Mirell was appointed by Mayor Villaraigosa to the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority Commission in 2005. Douglas E. Mirell is a partner in the Los Angeles office of Loeb & Loeb LLP. Mirell practices general corporate and business litigation with a concentration in First Amendment litigation, defamation claims and anti-SLAPP motions, intellectual property and entertainment lawsuits, voting rights litigation, freedom of information laws, government access statutes and a variety of constitutional law questions. Mr. Mirell’s clients have included the member companies of the Motion Picture Association of America, Inc., the National Broadcasting Company, the Japan Broadcasting Corporation, the Association of American Publishers, Omnicom Group Inc., Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide and The Franklin Mint. A recipient of the Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory’s highest “AV” professional rating, he litigates extensively in both federal and state courts. In every year since 2004, Los Angeles Magazine has named Mr. Mirell one of Southern California’s “Super Lawyers” in the field of intellectual property litigation. He was also selected as one of “35 young Lawyers To Keep An Eye On” in the July 24, 1995 issue of California Law Business, and was the subject of a front-page profile in the December 9, 1996 issue of the Los Angeles Daily Journal. Mr. Mirell currently serves as President of the Progressive Jewish Alliance and of the ACLU Foundation of Southern California. His other non-profit board memberships have included the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles (Federation), the American Jewish Congress (AJCongress), the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California, the Central American Resource Center and LA youth (a newspaper by and about LA area teens). A former chair of the Urban Affairs commission of the Federation’s Jewish Community Relations Committee, Mr. Mirell is a founding member of both the African-American/Jewish Leadership Connection and Muslim/Jewish Dialogue Group. He is also a former chair of the Jewish Public Affairs Committee of California, the statewide legislative advocacy arm of California’s organized Jewish communities. Mr. Mirell has received numerous awards for his pro bono public litigation efforts, including his work on behalf of the prevailing Latino plaintiffs in the landmark Los Angeles County supervisorial redistricting litigation. Mr. Mirell earned his J.D. from the University of California at Davis School of Law in 1980. He received his B.A. in Political Science/Economics from Claremont Men’s College in 1977, graduating cum laude. Mr. Mirell was born in Los Angeles, California. He is married to Loyola Law School Professor Laurie L. Levenson; they have three children. |
